Special Father’s Day for 60th Anniversary

Listed Under: News

As it’s a very special year for the team at City Signs, it seems only fitting that we look back at the incredible achievement of the founder of our family business, Horace Wilkins, who started City Signs 60 years ago.

There’s always something a little bit special with family businesses… the hard work, the dedication and the knowing that generations to come have a part to play in making a difference in the local community. When Horace Wilkins, setup his signwriting business in 1960, little did he know that City Signs would become the leading signage supplier in Worcestershire with a huge range of signage solutions and cutting edge, modern day technologies.

Where did it all start?

Horace started his career as an apprentice at a signage company in Luton, where he learnt his craft in traditional signwriting methods. Then starting his new business venture in 1960, Horace branched out into Perspex letters. He quickly made a name for himself with clients such as Luton Airport, adding lettering to the aircraft and Vauxhall Motors, Percival Aircraft (Arabian Market), with all handmade signage.

The move to Worcestershire

After marrying Marilyn in 1969, they moved to Worcester to start a new life together and relocate the business to Foregate Street in Worcester City Centre. Horace quickly established City Signs as the ‘go-to’ company for traditional signwriting and the new emerging technologies. Clients included Carmichael Fire Engines and Cattle Trucks, Worcestershire County Cricket Club, Joseph Woods, Walsh & Co and many, many, more…

In 1989 Horace invested in his first basic vinyl letter cutting machine to work alongside his traditional signwriting methods. With the introduction of new signage technologies the speed at which work could be produced was greatly increased, as well as the variety of projects and applications.

The next generation in signwriters

As City Signs expanded, so did the family members, giving rise to the next generation in signwriters. Horace and Marilyn had three children, Darren, Deanne and Debbie, all with a passion for businesses in Worcestershire. Darren and Deanne who are now the Directors at City Signs since the retirement of Horace, lead with the family values instilled into them when their Dad was running the business.

For us as a family business, Father’s Day is not just a celebration of the head of our family and all those special memories, but also the unique heritage of carrying on our Dad’s legacy after 60 year’s at City Signs.

Happy Father’s Day from all the team at City Signs!
